BELLA Italia is an Italian restaurant in Port Angeles, Washington. Although the town’s population is only around 20,000 people, its name may be familiar, particularly if you have read any of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight saga.

Based primarily in the small town of Forks, Bella, Edward, Jacob, and the rest of the series’ characters sometimes travel to the larger town of Port Angeles, less than 100km away. One such trip brings about Bella and Edward’s first date – dinner at a restaurant named Bella Italia. Bella has almost been mugged after getting lost looking for a bookstore, but Edward comes to the rescue and takes her out for dinner before driving her home.

Opened in 1996 with the intention of providing Port Angeles diners with a taste of genuine Italian hospitality, Bella Italia’s menu features a range of traditional dishes and wines to accompany them. The restaurant sources local organic produce and specialty products direct from Italy to achieve an authentic flavour. Although it predated the Twilight books, the first of which was published in 2005, Bella Italia has chosen to adjust to its supernatural fame, including a sign advertising itself as the home of Edward and Bella’s first date, and staff members, aware of the restaurant’s literary link, willingly play along with diners recreating the date for themselves.

At the time that Stephanie Meyer was writing her novel, she contacted the restaurant to enquire what was on the menu. She was told that there was a mushroom ravioli on offer as a special, and this was the dish that she chose for Bella to request for her first meal with Edward. As a result of the novel’s popularity, the restaurant has now chosen to add it to the permanent menu, bringing thousands of diners to try it for themselves.

Reviews suggest that this is a quality Italian restaurant, even if you’re not a fan of the Twilight series.

  1. My daughter is in the middle of the series and didn’t realize the cities and many locations were real places. It made her enjoy reading even more. Thank you for sharing this!

I wouldn’t have assumed it was a real place either. I love the way authors pick out tiny little real details like this and put them into their books. You never know what is imaginary and what’s real.
